Fire Stations = Safe Havens

Published Dec. 4, 2009 at 10:46 a.m.

ATLANTA (AP) Atlanta fire houses will soon become safe havens for the city's most vulnerable children.

Mayor Shirley Franklin is unveiling the SAFE S.P.O.T.S. program, a partnership with the Atlanta Fire- Rescue Department. The Safe Place Off The Streets effort will turn fire stations into refuges for victims of commercial sexual exploitation, child abuse, sexual assault and domestic violence.

Friday, officials are outlining the new safety protocol that is being implemented at all Atlanta fire stations, including a complete lock-down of the station when a distressed victim enters for assistance.

The initiative was created by the Office of Mayor Shirley Franklin in collaboration with fire department officials.
