Robber Needed House Payment

Published Dec. 18, 2009 at 10:44 a.m.

ATLANTA (AP) A man told a bank teller that he was down on his luck before robbing the Atlanta bank.

Atlanta police spokesman James Polite said the man in his late 40s or early 50s gave the teller at Sun Trust Bank on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive a note asking for money and saying he needed to pay his mortgage. The note ended with ``Merry Christmas.''

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the man was carrying a box wrapped in electrical tape and told the teller that he had a bomb.

Polite said the man left the bank running east.
