Henry Co. Fire and Shooting

Published March 17, 2010 at 10:38 p.m.

(WSB Radio)  A deadly fire in Stockbridge leads to an officer-involved shooting in Ellenwood.  Henry County Police Captain Jason Bolton tells WSB it all began with a fire at a home on East Atlanta Road Wednesday morning.

"During that particular incident, the body of a male subject was discovered inside the home," said Bolton.

An immediate lookout was posted for a 45-year-old man, believed to be the victim's stepson. Hours later, he was spotted at a Chevron station at 630 Fairview Road in Ellenwood.

"The officers made contact with that man in the parking lot near his vehicle.  Upon making contact with him, he produced a gun, shots were fired, and the individual was struck and he was transported to Grady," said Bolton.

They're still trying to determine if the fire, which also injured the suspect's mother, was deliberately set.

"Obviously, there were some statements made.  I don't know exactly what those contents were, but our understanding is that right before the fire occurred, this individual was there at the home with his mother and the stepfather," said  Bolton.
