ATLANTA, Ga. (AP) A 59-year-old former lawyer was sentenced by a federal judge in Atlanta to more than five years in prison for defrauding his clients of over $4.3 million in trust funds.
Judge Thomas W. Thrash Jr. sentenced 59-year-old M. Dewey Bain of Sugar Hill, Ga., on Wednesday. Bain pleaded guilty in April to a wire fraud charge.
Prosecutors say Bain told clients, many of whom were elderly, that their money was in safe investments earning good returns. They say Bain actually used the money for personal expenses and his own business interests.
One victim told the court she lost nearly $1 million as a result of Bain's activities.
Bain also was ordered to pay $4.35 million in restitution to his victims.
