Teen Critical in Smyrna Hit-and-Run

Published July 17, 2010 at 10:28 a.m.

(WSB Radio) -- A teenage girl injured in a hit-and-run crash was still in critical condition late Saturday night.

Smyrna police said the suspect hit Alex Langford, 17, while she was out of the car. It happened while the suspect was trying to flee after crashing into the back of the vehicle Langford and her friends were in just after midnight Saturday on Cobb Pkwy. north of Cumberland Blvd.

"Apparently the vehicle had struck the victim's vehicle that was stopped in the roadway," Officer Michael Smith told WSB Radio. "When the suspect sped away, the suspect hit the victim."

Langford is at Grady Hospital with serious leg and head injuries. She is a rising senior at Campbell High School.

"She wants to be a brain surgeon," Andre Langford, her father, told WSB-TV. "She's never made nothing but straight A's. This is a wonderful, wonderful child. This would be such a waste to lose her."

Friend Chanelle Morgan said she was driving the car Langford was in early Saturday morning. She said they stopped on Cobb Pkwy. to let a friend get out of the car following an argument. They thought the road was clear. Morgan said her dog then jumped out of the vehicle. Langford was trying to grab it when she was hit.

"When I turned back," Morgan told WSB-TV, "I heard a boom (and saw) her flying down the street."

Police were looking a for a white older-model Chevrolet Camaro with extensive front end damage. They did not have a description of the driver. If you have any information call Smyrna police at 770-434-6666 or 770-434-9481
