Bear Gets Residents' Attention in Gainesville

Published July 17, 2010 at 9:41 a.m.

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) A bear that's been seen roaming around Gainesville has made a couple more appearances.

Kevin Lowrey, a Department of Natural Resource wildlife biologist, said Friday that while he's trying to catch the bear, which began showing up around town on Thursday, he needs the right opportunity.

Lowrey thought he had an opportunity Friday morning when the bear stayed at one resident's bird feeder for an extended period. But when Lowrey arrived, the bear was moving again.

Gainesville resident Janice Ludwig says the 100-pound male bear showed up on her deck on Thursday and was chased by her two small dogs.

Lowrey says the bear is not aggressive and the best thing would be for it to find its own way out of town.
