Keywords:(WSB Radio) Mike Woodson and the Atlanta Hawks are parting ways.
After six seasons with the team, the head coach's contract is not being renewed. The decision comes after a couple of disappointing back-to-back appearances in the Eastern Conference playoffs. This year, the Hawks were swept in the second round by the Orlando Magic.
In a statement, Hawks general manager Rick Sund said, "After careful consideration, we have made a difficult decision regarding coach Woodson's contractual status. We're grateful for Mike's contributions over the last six years and we want to wish him the very best.''
The news comes in the same week that Forbes named Atlanta the second most miserable sports city in the nation. Forbes.com described the rankings as "the kind of misery that comes from teasing the fans by getting close to a championship, only to let them down in the end."
Contacted by the Associated Press, Woodson declined to expound on the announcement by the team.
"I'm just going to take some time and go away and clear my head,'' he told the AP. "I just want to get away.''
