Published April 3, 2010 at 10:11 a.m.

(WSB Radio) -- Police shot and killed a man near the Atlanta Fulton Public library east of Freedom Parkway.

Two officers were conducting a criminal investigation in an apartment complex across the street from the Martin Luther King Jr. library branch, according to the Atlanta Police Department.

"They encountered an individual ," interim police Chief George Turner said.   "A fight ensued, and ultimately...shots were fired."

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. Friday. It's not clear who fired the two shots, but the individual died on scene. As of late Friday night, police had not contacted next-of-kin and remained tight-lipped about the investigation. Police did not say what they were initially investigating at the apartment complex in the 100 block of Jackson Street.
